Description: Interns will work with NPS staff in collaboration with SUU outdoor recreation Professor Dr. Kelly Goonan, to collect recreation impact data and transportation impact data in Bryce Canyon National Park. The interns will work in varied environments: congested visitation areas and remote backcountry areas below the rim. The majority of time will be spent in the developed and more visited portions of the park. Some backcountry hiking will take place with the possibility of camping overnight in the backcountry. Primary duties will entail field based data collection along park trails, at park viewpoints, parking lots, areas where visitor impacts to vegetation is occurring in both developed areas and along the park’s backcountry trail system, as well as data analysis and reporting.

Qualifications:

Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team setting. Capable of working independently on assignments with minimal supervision. Proficiency in typing and computer usage. Willing to spend extended periods of time in the field and is comfortable in outdoor environments with limited cell phone service. Park radio will be provided. Willing to work outdoors in Bryce Canyon National Park for up to 5 days at a time. Capable of hiking across uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions carrying a field pack, water, and personal supplies. For backcountry travel, capable of carrying an overnight backpack, plus field supplies, water and personal supplies. Capable of field trip planning, logistics, and risk management.
